If you’re thinking of taking your family on a hike in the mountains, here are 10 tips that will help make your trip more enjoyable. Hiking in the mountains is a great way to get your family away from the hustle and bustle of city life and into some fresh air. But if you're not used to hiking, it can be tough to know where to start. That's why we've put together this list of our top 10 tips for hiking in the mountains with kids. By following these tips, you'll be sure to have a safe and fun time on your next hike!

1. Pick an easy trail.

When you're first starting out, it's best to pick a shorter, easier trail. You can always work your way up to longer, more difficult hikes as you and your family get more experience. Choose a trail that is appropriate for your family’s fitness level and abilities. There’s nothing worse than being on a hike that is too difficult or challenging for your kids.

2. Dress in layers.

The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it's important to dress in layers. This way, you can add or remove clothing as needed to stay comfortable. Check the weather conditions before you go. This will help you determine what kind of clothing and gear you need to bring.

3. Make sure you have plenty of snacks and water.

It's important to keep your energy up when you are hiking, so be sure to pack plenty of snacks and drinks for everyone in your group. Everyone knows that 'hanger' strikes when your least expecting it, so it’s best to be prepared. Pack some snacks that will give you energy such as granola bars or trail mix. And don’t forget to pack enough water for everyone! You will need more than you think. We recommend at least 2 litres for each person on the hike.

4. Pack a first-aid kit.

In case anyone gets hurt on the hike, it's important to have a first-aid kit packed and ready to go. Accidents happen, even when we’re being careful. It’s always better to be safe than sorry by bringing along Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, blister plasters and gauze pads.

5. Stick together.

It can be easy to get separated from each other on the trail, so make sure everyone stays close together. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep an eye out for animals, uneven terrain, and cliffs or drop-offs. Make sure everyone in your group stays together so no one gets lost

6. Take breaks often.

If anyone starts to feel tired, take a break! It's better to rest now and then than to push yourself too hard and risk getting hurt later on in the hike.

7. Watch out for wildlife.

The mountains are home to all sorts of different animals, so be on the lookout for them while you hike! If you see an animal that you're not sure is friendly, it's best to stay away and give it space.

8 . Be careful around bodies of water.

If there are any rivers or lakes along your hike, be extra careful around them . Make sure everyone in your group knows how to swim before attempting any hikes that have bodies of water .

9 . Know your limits.

Don't try to do too much too soon . If you're feeling unsure about anything , it's always better to turn back or take a different trail . Plan to arrive back at your car well before it gets dark. Let someone know where you’re going before you start your hike and when you will be back. Remember to call this person when you have finished your hiking!

10 . Have fun !
